CHARLESTON -- Not all the events had yet been completed by press time Thursday, but the Du Quoin High School girls track team was off to an impressive start in the preliminaries of the Class 1A state meet on the campus of Eastern Illinois University at Charleston.

The Lady Indians were in first place in both the 4x100- and 4x800-meter relays in the prelims. Not only did they win their heats going away, advancing to the finals, they also had the best times of any team in all the heats in each relay. Their prelim time in the 4x100 is 49.50 seconds. Their time in the 4x800 is 9:48.73.

Members of the The 4x100 relay are: junior Bailey Harsy, sophomore Cyerrah Harris, freshman Ayanna Dunklin and senior Madison Davis. The 4x800 relay team consists of junior Gabby Alongi, sophomore Jacqueline Crain and freshmen Olivia Phillips and Grace Alongi.

Yet another relay team -- the 4x200 (Harsy, Phillips, and the Alongis) recorded a time of 1:45.79, first in its heat and second best overall.

Gabby Alongi won her heat in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.3 and ranks second overall behind Marianne Mihas of Chicago Latin School (2:18.2). Grace Alongi failed to reach the finals with her time of 2:30.53.

Gabby also won her heat of the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.34 seconds. That ranks her fifth overall. Olivia Phillips fell short of the finals with a time of 62.21 seconds.

Madison Davis was first in her heat of the 100-meter dash and fifth overall with a time of 12.35 seconds to move on to the finals.

Jaylnn Wood was tied for first in the pole vault with 11 other athletes after clearing 10 feet. Madeline Robison fell short of qualifying for the finals, clearing 8 feet, 6 inches.

Ayanna Dunklin was unable to qualify for the finals in the 100 meter-dash with a time of 12.946 seconds. Ashlee Hirsch of Pinckneyville also fell short at 13.54 seconds.

Wood came up short in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.79 seconds. Her teammate, Harsy, was also short at 16.18 seconds.
