A Carbondale man has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for stealing a purse out of a car in Murphysboro.

Jackson County State's Attorney Mike Carr says James A. McLafferty, 40, entered a plea of guilty last week to the charge of burglary, a class 2 felony. McLafferty was sentenced to serve 42 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections, followed by a period of two years of supervised release.

Carr says that on Aug. 29, 2017, McLafferty entered a motor vehicle parked outside a business in Murphysboro and removed the purse of the vehicle owner, who was inside the business. Video surveillance located at the business captured the incident.

McLafferty pleaded guilty to the charge of burglary and was sentenced to a term of 364 days in jail and placed on probation for 36 months. When he failed to comply with the conditions of his probation sentence, his probation was revoked, and he was re-sentenced to the prison term.
