PINCKNEYVILLE -- Pinckneyville Community Hospital will offer two Safe Sitter courses for young teens, grade 6-8, on Saturday, March 16, and Saturday, April 27.

The course will be taught by certified Safe Sitter instructors Amanda Frassato RN, Lindsey Winter, RN, and Nancy Keller, RN/BSN. Both classes will be from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with parents invited to attend a graduation ceremony at 3 p.m. Each class will be held in the hospital. The cost of $10 includes materials and lunch.

The course provides hands-on practice in lifesaving techniques to young teens who are home alone, watching younger siblings, or baby-sitting so they are equipped with the skills and confidence to act in an emergency. They learn basic first aid and infant and child choking rescue and CPR.

Students also receive instruction on how a child's age affects how to care for them, how to prevent problem behavior, and how to run their own baby-sitting business.

Students who graduate from a Safe Sitter course receive a completion card demonstrating that they know how to use their skills in situations they encounter.

More than 600,000 young teens have graduated from the medically-accurate program which teaches how, why, and where injuries happen so they can be prevented.

Classes will fill up quickly, please register to Jennifer Barbour at 618-357-8898. Register for the March 16, class no later than noon on March 6, and register for the April 27, class no later than noon on April 17.
