Waring to speak at SILIR meeting

George Waring, professor emeritus in the SIU Department of Zoology, will discuss "Birding the Highlands of Ecuador" at the Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement meeting at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20.

The meeting, free and open to the public, will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, located at 220 N. Tower Rd. in Carbondale. A coffee and social hour will begin at 9:30 a.m.

BGCC trivia night planned for Feb. 22

The Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale will play host to its annual "Trivia Night at the Oscars" Friday, Feb. 22 at the Copper Dragon Brewing Company in Carbondale. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Dinner will be catered by Great Boars of Fire, and a cash bar will be available.

Community members are invited to test their movie trivia knowledge for an opportunity to walk away with an Oscar.

The movie trivia competition will consist of 10 rounds of movie-related questions, with a bonus question for extra points.

Each member of the winning team receives a bottle of wine or sparkling grape juice, a movie gift certificate and an Oscar.

Attendees also can also participate in a 50/50 raffle and bid on silent auction items. All the members of the best themed/costumed table will also receive an Oscar.

The cost to attend the event is $35 per person or $280 for a table of eight.

All proceeds benefit the activities and programs of the BGCC.

Clerk to offer do-it-yourself divorce class on Feb. 23

The Jackson County Circuit Clerk, in conjunction with Land of Lincoln Legal Aid, will offer a do-it-yourself divorce class for residents of Jackson County beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Jackson County Sheriff's Office in Murphysboro.

Participants will receive instruction on how to complete their own divorce cases, from filing to the final divorce order.

No legal advice will be provided, only information on the process.

The cost is free, but participants must sign-up for the class in advance.

Carbondale to host information employment workshop

The city of Carbondale, Southern Illinois Healthcare and SIU are teaming up to host an Information Employment Workshop later this month.

The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Carbondale Civic Center, 5 to 7 p.m.

The event is designed to help the community learn and understand all phases of employment from Carbondale's top employers. Human resource representatives from each company will give presentations on the application, testing and interview processes. Individuals will have the opportunity to interact and ask questions after the presentations. The event is free and open to anyone in the community.

Next Science Cafe to focus on microscopy

The Science Center of Southern Illinois, located inside University Mall, will present a Science Café entitled "Seeing is Believing: Microscopy for Electrons, Atoms, Viruses, Bacteria and Large Particles" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28.

Punit Kohli with the SIU Department of Chemistry will discuss the art and science of microscopy, which allows scientists to see bacteria, viruses, even molecules and atoms.

Admission to Science Cafés is free and everyone is welcome. Those who come early can enjoy a complimentary cup of Gloria Jean's coffee.

Youth symposium planned for March 2

The women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority are planning a youth symposium for March 2 at the SIU Student Center as part of an effort to introduce community youth to career opportunities, community resources and methods for being safe. University and community presenters will be present to share career pathways, healthy physical activities.

Middle school students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades are invited to attend the event, which will take place in Ballrooms A and B. The presentations will start at 10:30 a.m and end by 3:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided for youth and presenters.

Sheriff to award four scholarships

Jackson County Sheriff Bob Burns will award four $500 scholarships this spring.

The awards are part of a scholarship program from the Illinois Sheriffs' Association that will award $50,000 in college scholarships throughout Illinois. The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and fees during the 2019-2020 academic year.

Applications are now available at the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, high school advising centers or online at ilsheriff.org. Students must complete the application, answer the essay question and return all documentation to the sheriff's office by March 15.
