A Carbondale man was sentenced to more than two decades in prison last week after he robbed a local market last fall.

State's Attorney Mike Carr says Joseph Paden, 21, of Carbondale was sentenced to serve 23 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to armed robbery, a class X felony.

Due to the use of a firearm, the sentencing range was enhanced.

On the afternoon of Oct. 29, 2018, officers with the Carbondale Police Department responded to Omar's Food Mart on East Walnut Street following a report of an armed robbery.

Paden was arrested for his involvement in the robbery a short time later and has since been in the custody of the Jackson County Jail.

The investigation was conducted by the Carbondale Police Department and the SIU Department of Public Safety.
