A Carbondale man has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for a weapon violation that occurred in August.

Jackson County State's Attorney Mike Carr says Demarcus O. Jones, 24, was sentenced this week to the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of unlawful use of weapons by a felon.

Carr says that at about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 25, Carbondale Police officers stopped a vehicle in which Jones was a passenger in the 700 block of South Lewis Lane. A K9 unit alerted to the presence of narcotics.

A female driver and four other male occupants were detained pending investigation.

A search of the vehicle revealed three loaded handguns and narcotics. A loaded .38 semi-automatic handgun was located under the front passenger seat where Jones had been sitting.

A search of Jones revealed an additional fully loaded extended .38 magazine consistent with the handgun. Jones has a previous felony conviction for burglary.

Carter pleaded guilty to the charge Nov. 26.
