Harrisburg police make arrests after more than 25 tires slashed

HARRISBURG -- Harrisburg police charged one adult and detained two juveniles Monday night following a rash of tire slashings reported in the city.

According to a police report, Harrisburg officers responded to the 600 block of West Parish Street at about 9:38 p.m. Monday after Saline County Central Dispatch received a report of vehicle tires being slashed in the area.

Sgt. Curt Hustedde, Officer Matthew Forrester, Saline County Deputy Adam Stanley and Illinois State Police Trooper Brett Lane arrived at the area.

According to the report, Hustedde located three males in the area matching the description of the suspects, according to the police report.

Officers charged Ryan Merritt, 21, of Harrisburg with two counts of burglary and seven counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A juvenile was detained and another juvenile was released to his mother, according to the report.

HPD had received at least 25 reports of slashed tires in the 24-hour period preceding the arrests, according to the report.

HPD thanked the sheriff's department and ISP for their assistance.
