MARION -- Now in its 11th year, the fall version of the enormously popular Leaps and Bounds Kidsignment semiannual sale was conducted over the weekend at The Pavilion.

Hundreds of mostly mothers, grandmothers and aunts from throughout Southern Illinois and surrounding states flocked to the venue, seeking rock-bottom prices on children's clothing, toys, baby beds, maternity clothes, shoes, children's furniture, games and much more.

The three-day event is the brainchild of shrewd entrepreneur Cheryl Cummins of Metropolis, who had no real idea of how successful the event would turn out to be.

"I'll never forget that first show when I only had 24 consignors," Cummins said. "Since then, it's not uncommon for us to average over five-to-six hundred consignors. Little did I know then that it would get this large."

For regular shoppers like Marion mother. Kelsey Phillips. and her husband. Timmy. it was an opportunity to grab some kids clothing and toys at bargain prices.

Timmy said, "I'm coaching softball here in Marion, so I'm looking for equipment and I've already found a bat, catcher's gear and a nice bat bag."

For many others like first-time shopper Jennifer Ray of Murphysboro, the event was a real eye opener.

"I do child care in my home and I'm looking for pieces I can use there," she said. "I just can't get over the enormous amount of items for sale -- and at great prices!"
