MARION -- It was nearly a month ago that Thanet Natisri played a pivotal role in the rescue of 13 members of the soccer team and their coach, trapped deep in the Than Luang cave in Thailand.

On Monday evening, the Marion restaurant owner (Thai-D) was honored by Rep. Dave Severin (R-Benton) and the Marion City Council.

"When I heard about what he did, it took me about half a second to call Mayor (Anthony) Rinella," said Severin. "I told him we've got to do something to recognize him."

Natisri, an expert in groundwater storage, was in Thailand working on a groundwater project for the Thai government when he was called on to help.

"The military requested my assistance," he told the Marion Republican last month. "They thought I might be able to help."

Natisri was awarded certificates honoring his actions in the rescue that captured international attention for several days.

"We call him our hero," said Rinella. "He downplays that, but obviously the Thai government knew of his experience. When the government calls on you, that speaks volumes."

Severin had similar words.

"What he did was extraordinary," the legislator said. "He was a big part of the answer to getting those kids out of the cave alive."

Severin plans to host Natisri in Springfield to be honored on the House floor during the next session.

Rinella noted that Natisri downplays his role.

"He wants no accolades, but to do what he did, to divert that water and keep it out to let those rescuers get those kids, that's huge, that's absolutely huge."

Rinella said that having Natisri as a citizen and business owner is an honor.

"Humble might be his middle name," said Rinella, "but the guy's a hero."
