With only a few days remaining, two Benton veteran's organizations are preparing the final push for a war they've decided to wage against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as "Lou Gehrig's disease."
The Benton American Legion and VFW posts will be hosting a barbecue dinner along with an ice bucket challenge this Saturday beginning at 1 p. m.
"It's a threefold thing," said Gary Fravel, commander of the VFW Post 2671. "It's a fundraiser to help the ALS Foundation, an informational program, and a memorial to those who have suffered and passed."
Fravel began doing research and found that ALS affects veterans at a much higher rate, with Gulf War vets at nearly twice the risk.
The event will offer a barbecue sandwich and chips for $3 along with the ice bucket challenge.
American Legion commander John Metzger, said the organizers are expecting several "VIP" figures, and hope that others will take up the challenge in the final days.
