Steeleville wins district opener shuts out Carbondale

The Steeleville Senior American Legion Baseball squad took on Murphysboro in their first game of the District tournament.

Murphysboro jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on an error, a walk and a double. Steeleville answered in the third inning sending ten batters to the dish plating four runs taking a 4-2 lead. Steeleville added three in the fourth to go ahead 7-2 only to see Murphysboro get two more in the fifth cutting the Steeleville advantage to 7-4. In the bottom of the fifth, Steeleville put the game away scoring seven runs and batting twelve hitters in the frame, winning 14-4.

Jacob Sutton went 2 for 3 with three RBI, three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. Gavin Conway was also 2 for 3. Dusty Sutton, Owen Gross, Ryan Vogt and Jordan Wilson each had one RBI. Owen Gross pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits.

Gross walked three while striking out five. AJ Stearns worked the final 2/3 of an inning striking out one.

July 12: Steeleville 6, Carbondale 0

The second round of the American Legion Senior Baseball District tournament pitted Steeleville against Carbondale.

Steeleville took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. They would scratch across another run in the fourth taking a 2-0 advantage. That score held up until the sixth inning when Steeleville put another four runs on the board taking a 6-0 lead which would end up the final score.

Ryan Vogt stifled Carbondale, pitching seven innings of two hit ball. Vogt walked one and struck out nine for the game. AJ Stearns went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI. Vogt was 1 for 4 with a double, a stolen base and two RBI, Dusty Sutton went 1 for 2 with two walks, a stolen base and an RBI. Owen Gross went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice and an RBI. Gavin Conway was 1 for 3 with two runs scored.
