One arrested after shooting on Sunday near the Strip

A DeSoto man was arrested following late-night gunfire on South Illinois Avenue over the weekend.

Police say officers arrested Brett Jones, 22, following a disturbance that began around 2:18 a.m. Sunday morning in the alleyway behind businesses on the Strip in downtown Carbondale.

As officers approached the disturbance, they heard several gunshots. As the officers ran to the area of the gunshots, they saw a male firing a handgun in the direction of a vehicle that was fleeing the alleyway.

Officers ordered the male, identified as Jones, to drop his weapon, and he immediately complied. He was arrested without further incident.

Officers heard an additional gunshot come from an occupant of the vehicle as it fled the area. That vehicle was subsequently located unoccupied on East Oak Street, and it was impounded. There were no reported injuries.

Jones was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of weapons.

Two other vehicles were involved in a traffic crash as a result of the original vehicle's actions. There were no injuries as a result of the traffic crash.
