Carbondale athlete earns third Special Olympics gold medal

Sheridan K. Coleman, 16, a junior at Carbondale Community High School, plays with the SI Lightning Bugs and has received her third gold medal as member of the state championship basketball team that competed March 16 to 18 at the state games in Bloomington.

Coleman also received the Ron Knisley Spirit of the Games Award. She is the daughter of Zenetta McDaniel Coleman and the granddaughter of Milton and Corene McDaniel.

The Southern Illinois Lightning Bugs is an all-girl basketball team made up of Special Olympics athletes from all over southern Illinois. The Lightning Bugs captured their fifth straight gold medal as state champs during the tournament.

Team organizers are Rich and Jane Henley of Marion. The team is led by coach Kathy Baumann of Murphysboro.
