Competition is strong for the annual Volunteer of the Year award given by the Franklin Hospital Auxiliary, a group whose mission is to volunteer to provide services and funding that are integral to the success of the hospital's operation.

"This year, one person stood out as an extra special choice," said Mary Ellen Aiken, president of the group. "When the officers and members were asked for suggestions, one name kept coming up."

Phyllis Petty was honored during Monday's Christmas Tea.

Her award was no surprise to Aiken."She has shown true dedication, energy and spirit," she said.

Petty volunteers in same day surgery, at the hospital's front desk, and has put in countless hours in several community activities with the auxiliary. She recruited 12 new members to the group this year and also serves as the card chairman, writing notes to members with illness or death in their families.

"On top of all this," said Aiken, "she also donated a top of the line Bi-Pap machine to the hospital during the Tree of Life campaign last year."

Petty was also presented with a certificate of recognition from the Illinois House of Representatives by Rep. Dave Severin (R-Benton) for her achievement.
