WILLIAMSON COUNTY - A three-vehicle accident in Williamson County on Interstate 57 Tuesday has resulted in a fatality.

Wayne S. Maxwell, 57, of O'Fallon, was pronounced dead at the scene by Williamson County Coroner Mike "Junior" Burke.

According to state police, a freighliner driven by Willie Lee Shelby, 62, of Madison, Mississippi was traveling northbound on the interstate at Mile Marker 47, about seven miles south of Marion at approximately 10:14 a.m. when the accident occurred, Traffic was backed up due to a construction project that began at Mile Marker 48.

Shelby's truck, along with Maxwell's 2002 GMC van and a 2010 Kenworth driven by Jagpreet Singh, 27, of Lenexa, Kansas, were all northbound. Singh was the lead vehicle followed by Maxwell and then Shelby. The two lead vehicles slowed for the backed-up traffic. The freightliner struck the rear of the GMC shoving it into the rear of the Kenworth, causing the fatal injuries to Maxwell.

Singh and a male passenger in his vehicle, Sarbjit Singh, 32, were both uninjured. Shelby sustained minor injuries and was transported via ambulance to a local hospital.

All northbound traffic was diverted off of I57 at Exit 45 until approximately 2:45 p.m. when it resumed normal flow. All three vehicles were towed from the scene due to damage.

Shelby was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash. Additional charges could be levied pending further investigation by Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Officers.
