A Du Quoin High School alum is taking his first lead acting part this summer by assuming the role of Tarzan in a production in Helena, Mont.

Hayden Cole Schubert, a 2014 graduate of DHS, is playing the title role in the Grandstreet Theatre's production of "Tarzan," which opened last Friday and runs through July 22. Schubert is the son of Carl and Tracy Schubert and grandson of Brian and Melody Henderson and Henry and Marion Schubert.

This fall, Schubert will enter his senior year in the musical theater program at SIU Carbondale under the direction of Tim Fink and J. Thomas Kidd. Other roles Schubert has played on stage more locally include Prentiss in "Peter and the Starcatcher," Frid in "A Little Night Music," Centaur in "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe," Abel in "Children of Eden," Valere in "Tartuffe," Brad in "Hairspray," Napthali In "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," and Simon/Lafe in "Big River."

Nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains in a small but thriving arts community, Grandstreet Theatre produces 10 to 12 plays and musicals each year in a preserved 200-seat, turn-of-the-century romanesque granite church and an additional 45-seat black box studio.

The company's musical production of "Tarzan" is based on Disney's animated film and Edgar Rice Burrough's original pulp novels.
