The city's newest police "officer" will soon be graduating from the state's police academy and prepared to fight crime in Benton.
Ranger, the canine recently purchased by the city, will be in service within a few weeks, according to Chief of Police Kyle Melvin.
"We are just a few weeks away from him graduating from the academy class, both him and the officer," Melvin said. "To this date, he's progressed like he should. I just spoke to the officer before I came, and he said [Ranger] would be road-ready today if they would let him go ahead and graduate."
Commissioner Don Storey said the Elks contributed $2,000 toward canine expenses. The donation was to formally be presented to city officials Thursday.
"We're so grateful that we're still getting donations to this day and grant money," Melvin said.
During the public session, community member Julie Payne inquired about Ranger's retirement.
Melvin said there is actually a state law that requires the dog's handler be given the first opportunity to adopt the dog following its retirement.
"Typically, that officer will go ahead and take the dog because of the relationship that was already there," Melvin said.
Melvin added he expects Ranger to be in service for at least 10 years due to his breeding history.
He also said the canine unit will be utilized throughout the community, visiting schools and clubs upon request.
