Woman airlifted after crash on 37

Local firefighters successfully pulled a woman from a mangled car after it slammed into a concrete retaining wall last week. Benton Fire Department personnel responded at 1:06 a.m. May 11 to Illinois 37 just north of Ace Hardware in Benton. They found one vehicle with heavy damage from impact with the wall, and one female occupant was pinned inside. Firefighters were able to extricate her, and Abbott EMS transported her to a waiting Air-Evac helicopter. She was airlifted to a trauma facility.
