JOHNSTON CITY - Add some more hardware to the trophy case in Johnston City as the math team placed second at the Class 1A (small school) state competition Saturday at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

Johnston City math teams have been among the very best in the state since 1989 and have captured several state titles, most of which occurred under retired instructor, Ron Nagrodski.

In recent years, the Clark boys - Trevor and Lenny - have taken control of the squad with assistance from Trevor Stanley.

"It's impressive... the amount of time that the kids put into this," co-coach Lenny Clark said.

As most of their competition is college preparatory schools, private schools, and home schools, Clark called his students' dedication and performance "amazing."

On Saturday, JC totaled 550 points in finishing second. Cornerstone High School from the Chicago area placed first with 644 points. There were 40 schools in all that competed in Class 1A.

A list of the winners for the Indians include: sophomore Chase Stanley (sixth in geometry); junior Sara Roman (10th in Algebra 2); senior Emily West and junior Cheyenne Smith (fifth in oral presentation as a team); seniors Clayton Shelby and Josh Thornton (10th in two-person junior/senior team); sophomores Chase Stanley and Jace Linton (third in two-person frosh/soph team);

JC also earned team awards in geometry (third); Algebra II (second); Frosh/Soph eight-person team (seventh); Calculator team (third); Frosh/Soph relay teams (seventh and third); and Junior/Senior relay teams (sixth and first).
