Local cities are among the dampest in the state

The statewide average precipitation for April in Illinois was 7.01 inches, 3.23 inches above normal and the second wettest April on record, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel at the University of Illinois' State Water Survey.
Three of the top five wettest Aprils since the late 1800s have been since 2011, indicating a wetter trend in recent years.
The largest monthly precipitation total for April in Illinois was in Carbondale with 14.41 inches. Several other sites in Southern Illinois had similar amounts, including Bush with 13.63 inches, West Frankfort with 13.35 inches, Kaskaskia with 13.34 inches and Murphysboro with 13.02 inches.
The statewide average temperature for April was 56.4 degrees, 3.8 degrees above average and the 11th warmest April on record. The warmest reading during April was 89 degrees at Kaskaskia April 20. The coldest reading for the month was 19 degrees at Morrison April 10.
The period from January to April was the warmest on record with a statewide average temperature of 44.5 degrees, which is 5.4 degrees above normal.
