The late Melvin "Jack" Schulte, of Chester, was honored in a short dedication ceremony on Monday at The Manor at Craig Farms.

The World War II veteran, who passed away in October at the age of 93, served in combat with the 104th infantry's Timber Wolf Division in Belgium Holland and Germany, crossing the Rhine River into Germany and being present for Germany's surrender.

"All (medals) are displayed in the shadow box and will hang in The Manor in memory of Jack," said Jennifer Diercks, life enrichment director at The Manor. "He was a beloved member of our 'Manor Family' and we are proud to be able to honor and remember him this way."

Schulte's family donated the medals to The Manor, which will be displayed on the Table of Heroes that honors both current and former servicemen and servicewomen.

"We would like to dedicate this memorial to Jack and all of our Manor veterans, past, present and future," Diercks said. "Thank you again to the family for the donation and thank you veterans for your service to our country and our freedom."

Chester American Legion Alva Courier Post No. 487 honor guard members Lee Hollaway, Jeff Warhausen, Roland Wagner and Harry Jones presented the colors and the event was concluded with a reading of "A Veteran's Prayer."

The event was part of "Supportive Living Week," with the theme of "Happiness is ageless." Monday's specific theme was "Happiness is freedom."
