Unit 280 Auxiliary holds April meeting

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 280 held its monthly meeting April 10.
President Freda Broadway called the meeting to order, and the opening prayer was given by Chaplain Jennifer Hudetts. Broadway welcomed new member Shelia Bonsack and guest Stephanie Bain.
Secretary Maureen Sanders read minutes from last month's meeting, and Treasurer Norma Shockley gave the financial report. Jackie Wyskiel, junior vice president, gave a report on the Rend Lake parade, which will be May 13. The unit will have a float in the parade. Wyskiel also talked about the upcoming poppy distribution days, which will be May 26 and 27. The unit will have ladies at Walmart, Fred's, Bonzfire Grill and on the public square.
Broadway gave a report on "Socks of Love" being distributed to local law enforcement personnel. The tube socks are filled with comfort items, such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and snacks. Several local dentists have donated toothbrushes and toothpaste. Participating in the effort have been Dr. Robin LaBuwi, Dr. Walter Dawkins, Dr. Clark Dixon, the ladies at State Bank of Whittington, Cathy Lamont at the 911 office and Don Hopkins from Heartland Office Supply.
Unit 280 will be sponsoring a student for the nursing scholarship which is given to a young lady continuing her nursing career.
Broadway thanked all the ladies for their continued support of the unit, the post, veterans and the community.
The last night the unit will be doing fish is April 28.
Broadway closed the meeting, and Chaplain Jennifer Hudetts gave the closing prayer. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 8 and will include the election of new officers.
