Expansion of an industrial park near the Benton Municipal Airport has result in infrastructure improvements to the area.
During Monday's Benton City Council meeting, commissioners approved the construction of a new sewer main on the north industrial park property, contingent upon funds being available.
In a separate but related motion, the engineering firm of Crawford and Associates was given authorization to apply for a permit for the sewer main.
Public Property Commissioner Ronnie Baumgarte explained the Economic Development Commission has several lots in the Industrial Park and requested the sewer line be hooked up to an interceptor in the area.
Baumgarte said his department can't do the work due to the construction of the new sewer plant. Grants are not available for the work, it was reported.
Baumgarte recommended the city purchase a lawn mower from Ben's Lawn Service. The city had contracted mowing work in past years. Baumgarte suggested the work be done in-house on Saturdays in order to save the city about $1,000 per month. The mower purchase was approved by council.
In other action:
Council approved the posting of a full-time street department position.
Keener's Cleaners was approved for janitorial services at the police department. The business currently provides that service at city hall.
Council voted to move forward with the creation of a backup ambulance service to Abbott's Ambulance Service. The West Frankfort Fire Department recently donated the ambulance to the city. Commissioner Dennis Miller voted no on the proposal.
A bid of $10.49 per ton, or $20,980 annually, was accepted from Beelman Concrete to provide rock to the city.
Commissioners approved placing the 2017-2018 budget on public display. The budget is expected to be approved formally at the council's April 10 meeting.
