The Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton Bearcats will remain on the hunt for their first win after a 42-0 storm-delayed loss to Edwards County Monday night.

Friday night’s game was suspended because of lightning after the first quarter, giving Christopher a rare local taste of Monday night football.

Coach Josh McCurren said he saw progress in his defense despite the final result.

“Our defense played much better tonight,” he said. “Tonight, I feel like we actually made them earn it.”

“That’s a positive for us,” he said.

Edwards County started Monday night with a 7-0 advantage, but they scored three more times to take a 28-0 lead into halftime.

Late in the first half, it appeared CZR would go to the locker room only three touchdowns behind. But with just more than a minute left, Edwards County intercepted a Christopher pass, setting up a touchdown seconds later.

The Bearcats threatened to score in the fourth quarter as quarterback Cam Newton nearly completed a touchdown pass on fourth down more than 10 yards from the end zone.

But it bounced incomplete, leaving CZR without a touchdown Monday night.

The Bearcats drop to 0-3 on the season and travel to Eldorado for their next game Friday.

McCurren said a Monday night game can be tough for a young football team that also has to play a sophomore game Tuesday.

“Hopefully our kids look at it as it’ll be fun because you get to play football on a weeknight,” he said.
