BENTON — The Franklin County Sheriff's office is investigating a home invasion that occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday at a residence in the Freeman Spur area near the Franklin-Williamson counties line.

Sheriff Don Jones states two masked subjects forced their way into the residence occupied by a female and her infant child. The perpetrators were armed with at least one handgun and shot and killed the owner's dog. The female was also struck by one of the perpetrators as she was forced at gunpoint to lie face down on the floor with her child. The victim received minor injuries and the child was unharmed.

Authorities are asking for anyone who observed anyone or anything suspicious that evening in the Freeman Spur area to contact the sheriff's office. The sheriff's office is being assisted by the Illinois State Police crime scene services as well as Herrin Police.
