FRANKLIN COUNTY — Two semis collided in the northbound lanes of Interstate 57 near West Frankfort early Wednesday morning — causing a fuel tank on one of the rigs to rupture.
Illinois State Police report that Scott L. Leach, 33, of Des Moines, Iowa, was driving a five-axle combination with a box trailer and swerved to avoid a deer. The truck overturned and the dark undercarriage of the semi was not identified by a second truck, driven by Patrick Shinn, 62, of Highland.
Police said Shinn struck the Leach semi, rupturing its fuel tank.
Police said the impact caused a small spill which was mitigated by the West Frankfort Fire Department.
The northbound lanes of I-57 were closed until 7:15 a.m. following the 4:15 a.m. collision.
Leach was ticketed for violating the median.
Leach was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries; Shinn was not injured.
