Harold & Jean Summers celebrate 60th

Harold and Jean Summers of Akin will be celebrating 60 years of marriage on April 29, 2010.

Jean and Harold have three children, Kenneth (Shelia) Summers of Akin, Dennis (Jessica) Summers of Mt. Vernon and Dwight (Alice) Summers of Akin. They are also blessed with seven grandchildren, Heather (Charlie) Haynes, Selinda (Derek) Johnson, Shannon (Jason) Bennett, Jason, Justin, Celia and Braden. Their great-grandchildren include Scott, Cassie, Katy, Charlie, Daniel, Tanner and Logan.

Jean and Harold Summers will be celebrating their anniversary from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at the Akin Grade School. Everyone is welcome to come join them.

Wishes Granted: Students enjoy pizza party, presents

Wishes were granted for a handful of Benton Grade School students Tuesday night at the Benton Elks Lodge.

Micah Hopkins, Deacon Morris, Nicole Shepard, Brad Veteto and Breanna Wright — along with their siblings and parents — were treated to a pizza party and a surprise visit from Santa Claus.

The students’ letters to Santa were selected from those written by all BGS students. Every letter will be published in the Christmas Eve edition of The Benton Evening News on Dec. 24.

The Wishes Granted program was sponsored by Flowers by Dave, Town & Country True Value Hardware, the Times Square Mall and the Benton Elks.

Decor highlights Hospital Auxiliary homes tour

Area residents will see plenty of holiday decorations — and even learn some history — during Sunday’s Franklin Hospital Auxiliary Christmas Homes Tour.

The event, which will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. in Benton, features three local homes and the Glass Haunt.

“We will have a short tour, and we’ll tell people about the history of this house,” said Ruth Green, owner of the Glass Haunt, located at 218 N. McLeansboro St. “We also have some old photos, and we will put those up for people to look at.”

Trick-or-treating times scheduled

Trick-or-treat hours have been set for several Franklin County communities.

Trick-or-treating will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in West Frankfort, with the Trail of Treats taking place from 4 to 5 p.m. Christopher, Sesser and Valier have set trick-or-treat hours for 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.

Trick-or-treating will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, in Akin, Benton, Ewing, Logan, Royalton and West City, and from 5 to 9 p.m. in Buckner. Additionally, the Royalton parade is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday.

Happy 99th birthday, Jennie!

Jennie Proctor enjoys a couple of balloon bouquets on her 99th birthday, which she celebrated Friday with family and friends at Fifth Season Residential in Benton.

Proctor credited her longevity to “good, clean livin’ ... and I’m just so ornery!”

Logan alumni games set Jan. 23 & 24

The Logan Community Center will be hosting its 12th annual Alumni Basketball Game at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23 and 24, at the Logan Gym.

The peewee team will be playing the Thompsonville Tigers at 6 p.m., and the first alumni game should start around 7 p.m. The second game will follow at approximately 8 p.m.

5 generations of Smith family

Five generations of the Smith family in Franklin County recently gathered for a photo — including great great-grandmother, Esther L. Smith of Benton; great-grandmother, Mary Ann Bretzman of Mulkeytown; GrandPa Dana Lee McClendon of Mulkeytown; mother, Michelle Nicole of Christopher; and new addition, Johanna June Godwin.

All enjoy Kiwanis Christmas party

Turkey and all of the trimmings, music by Benton Middle School choir and Benton Consolidated High School Madrigal Singers, photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus and animal balloons — these and more were part of the annual Kiwanis Division 33 Christmas party for special needs populations, held Tuesday at the Benton Civic Center.

Dave Webster, Benton Kiwanis Club treasurer, said the annual Fun Day Christmas party brought more than 800 people out on a cloudy, rainy day.

Ceremony in Benton honors veterans

Veterans and family members, local residents and dignitaries braved the chilly weather Tuesday morning as Benton VFW and American Legion posts observed Veterans Day.
