Marion Garden Club has awarded the home of Justin and Jennifer Tight with Garden of the Month for August. The Tights have been working on their yard at 141 Seventh St. for seven years.
They have a pond with a flowing water stream with a flower bed surrounding it. The pond is filled with water lettuce and floating hyacinths, which help keep the water clean for their goldfish.
Around the pond are banana trees, cockscomb, hostas, zinnias and a weeping cherry tree. Large hanging pots filled with petunias and hummingbird feeders line the porch. Hummers fight over the food and hide in hanging baskets.
Justin said all of the work was done on a "poor man's budget." He educated himself on the construction and care of a water garden and made the filtration system himself. He digs up the banana trees in the fall, stores them and replants them in the spring. Many of his plantings are perennial.
Marion Garden Club members are looking for a home to be spotlighted in September. Suggestions may be left at mariongardenclubofillinois.weebly.com.
