What better way to celebrate the Independence Day week than by doing something special to honor and support those who gave so much for their country?

The Benefit for This Able Veteran will be held July 8 at the DuQuoin State Fairground Exhibition Hall, featuring great music and food along with giveaways and a silent auction.

Pulled pork sandwiches and smoked chicken dinners will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a special presentation by This Able Veteran, a Carbondale-based nonprofit organization that provides trained service dogs and a trauma resiliency program for veterans to help them recover from psychological and physical injuries incurred as a result of their service.

Musicians We've Got it Covered and Keenan Rice will perform 8-11:30 p.m. The event will also include a silent auction, drawing and giveaways.

Tickets are $20 for the evening, including dinner and performances. Advanced ticket purchases are encouraged for the dinner portion via julie@thisableveteran.org or at (618) 924-4610. Tickets are $10 for the concert only and will be available at the door.

All veterans will be admitted free to the music portion of the evening when presenting proper identification.

Visit the benefit Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/622815964575956??ti=ia for more details.

All proceeds of the evening benefit This Able Veteran, which relies on such fundraisers to accomplish their mission of helping veterans.

Every day 20 American veterans take their own lives, and another 600,000 veterans suffer from traumatic stress. This Able Veteran provides the service dogs along with specialized training, to the veterans at no cost. The cost of acquiring, raising and training one service dog from puppyhood through program graduation is about $25,000.
