Freda Broadway said she hates to see a tattered American flag.
As president of Benton American Legion Post 280 Auxiliary, Broadway and members Frieda Fitzpatrick, Ruth Morgan, Chaplain Sharon Ellis and Virginia Smith honored veterans and working men and women before the Labor Day holiday by presenting a new flag to StoneBridge Senior Living Center.
"Several veterans live at StoneBridge," Broadway said. "We felt it was the least we could do to present them with a new flag just in time for Labor Day."
Dorothy Bauer's legacy continues at the Benton Community Park.
A contribution in Bauer's honor to the Southern Illinois Community Foundation helped pay for current renovations along the roadway near the park's ball fields.
Park crew members worked Thursday to install straw blankets to help protect grass seed planted along 20-foot extensions on each side of the road.
Benton residents Marilyn Phillips and Steve Kuba were crowned queen and king of the 2010 Du Quoin State Fair senior prom held Wednesday at the Southern Illinois Center.
The coronation closed the three-hour prom that began at noon.
Approximately 425 senior citizens from across the region participated in Senior Day activities at the fair. The day featured the story-telling of Riverboat John and entertainer Magic Mike, a perennial Du Quoin State Fair performer.
A tribute is being planned for Christopher native Kerry Michael Bugajsky by his classmates from the CCHS Class of 1965.
The event will take place Friday, Sept. 3, at halftime of the Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton Bearcats football game.

The annual information meeting is held to inform parents of expectations and classroom routines.
Times are staggered to accommodate parents of children in more than one grade level. Sessions last for 20 minutes each and begin with kindergarten at 6:30 p.m., first grade at 6:50 p.m., second grade at 7:10 p.m., third grade at 7:30 p.m. and fourth grade at 7:50 p.m.
