Stay Tuned: Poor bedside manner is the least of 'Dr. Ken's' problems

Ken Jeong is a doctor, and now he plays one on TV. The real-life doctor-turned-comedian-turned-actor stars in "Dr. Ken" as the title character, a physician who needs to work on his bedside manner. Jeong, best known for his roles in the "Hangover" films and the television show "Community," is funniest when he plays over-the-top characters who drop into a story and steal the scene from the main players. "Dr. Ken" doesn't allow Jeong to do what he does best, and the show suffers for it.

With several hundred original scripted shows in production among broadcast, cable and streaming outlets, the pressure is on to create a hit series this fall. Fox's entries in the situation comedy category, namely "Grandfathered" and "The Grinder," are both solid efforts, but only one is a hit.

Stay tuned: 'Survivor's Remorse': When a bad title happens to a good show

Season two of the badly titled comedy "Survivor's Remorse" checks in with the Calloway family as son Cam, rising basketball star, begins his job with a fictional Atlanta-based team. Well-paced and well written, the show is about a basketball player but it has very little to do with basketball. It is a sharp and funny commentary on the choices a family makes within the context of fame.

Stay Tuned: Fun office romance on 'Kevin (From Work)'

Declaring your love for someone who you think you'll never see again might seem like a good plan, unless you do see them again -- for eight hours a day, every day, at work. Then it's just super awkward. "Kevin (From Work)" puts a twist on workplace romance, and the result is a funny look at owning your feelings.

Stay Tuned: Remembering a tennis great on 'American Masters: Althea'

Arthur Ashe is often credited with being the first African-American to win Wimbledon (1975), though the honor actually belongs to Althea Gibson, who won it in 1957 and again in 1958. Her life is the focus of "American Masters: Althea." The documentary has stylistic problems, but they are more a distraction than a deterrent to viewing. Althea was a tennis pioneer whose story is remarkable for both her achievements on the court and the complicated role race, gender and class played in them.

Mike "Rooster" McConaughey and Wayne "Butch" Gilliam sit at a table draped with an animal hide. There's a jar of peanuts off to the side and no shortage of beer or mounted animal heads. Welcome to the clubhouse of the "West Texas Investors Club," also known as "Shark Tank: The Western." What it lacks in business speak it makes up for in cowboy clichés. How much you like this investment reality show depends on how much you enjoy watching Rooster and Butch.

Stay Tuned: Problems are only skin deep on 'Atlanta Plastic'

Reality shows that focus on transformation follow a typical pattern. First comes the problem, which could take the form of any of the following: a falling-down house, a kitchen that looked good in 1978, a fashion/hair/makeup fail, too many cats. This is followed by the solution: building, renovating, re-styling, re-homing. The payoff is the reveal where we get to see how different houses and people can look once the experts step in to right the wrongs. When these experts are plastic surgeons and the problem is physical appearance, the things that are "wrong" are suddenly more complicated. Or at least they should be. When they're not, the result is "Atlanta Plastic," a series that promotes physical change as the simple answer to the complex question of psychological pain.
