Du Quoin Call report
updated: 10/30/2019 1:52 PM

It's official: Trunk or Treat is going on as scheduled Wednesday night in downtown Du Quoin - so get out the costumes, the candy buckets and be ready for a good time.

Along with the big candy giveaway, there will be awards for best decorated trunks, and awards for the best decorated lanterns along Main Street.

The light pole contest on Main Street has resulted in 15 entries, all conceived and executed in just a little over a week.

"We didn't give them a lot of time," Alongi said of the businesses that are participating. He said in 2020 the city will get the word out earlier and send letters to businesses.

"I knew we wouldn't get every pole this year (there are about 45 on Main Street). But we decided to give it a try."

The idea for the clever light pole designs originated with Red Bud. In Du Quoin, the entries range from the macabre to the funny -- witness the poor sap who died waiting for his tax return.

Trick or treating will also go on as usual Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Du Quoin Trunk or Treat hours will be 6-8 p.m. on Main Street Everyone is encouraged to come in costume and the children will collect candy from merchants and organizations. "Trunk" participants will be judged for "best decorated," and win 1st, 2nd or 3rd place trophies and everyone involved will get a souvenir entry ribbon.

Du Quoin's official trick or treat hours are 6-8:30 p.m.
