• Elkville Story Walk: Every day this week through Saturday, in Elkville. Laminated pages from the "Mother Bruce" children's picture book series are set up at outdoor stations, starting at 8th and Board streets (across from Elverado Primary School) on the south side of Board Street. Follow the pages along Board Street until it crosses the street to the north side and continues to Rick Warren Library, 114 S. 4th St.

• Vergennes Battle of the Badges: 2-6 p.m., 725 Hack St., Vergennes. Red Cross blood drive.

Friday, May 11
• Elks Club Boys All-Sports Banquet: 7-9 p.m., Du Quoin Elks Club on Shagbark Road. Recognizing the athletes from Du Quoin High School boys sports teams. Family and friends encouraged to attend. $10 (athletes free); includes a meal and the program. Keynote speaker: Former DHS All-State lineman and M.I.T. graduate Cody Edwards.
• Old King Coal Festival: May 10-13, in downtown West Frankfort. Annual festival features live entertainment, food, drinks, games, carnival, coal miner's memorial, Princess Flame pageant, parade at 1 p.m. Saturday. For details and schedules, visit http://www.oldkingcoalfestival.org/.
• Southern Illinois Miners season opener: 7:05 p.m. at Rent One Park in Marion. The Miners host the Lake Erie Crushers.
