JALC spring concert set for April 29

The John A. Logan College Community Band and Community Orchestra will present their annual spring concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 29 in the college's conference center on the Logan campus. Admission is free.

These two community ensembles are made up of musicians of all ages from throughout the Southern Illinois region who perform for the love of music. Both are volunteer groups sponsored and made possible by John A. Logan College. The ensembles will perform separate programs and then, for the grand finale, will combine to perform "Mansions Of The Lord" by Nick Glennie-Smith, and "Polovetsian Dances" by Alexander Borodin.

The orchestra's conductor is Bob Swearingen from Murphysboro. The orchestra portion of the concert will include traditional and contemporary selections. Selections will include: "Sleepers Wake!" by J.S. Bach; "Oh Praise The Lord" arranged by Bob Swearingen; "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen and arranged by Robert Longfield; "Rondeau" from 'Suite des Sumphonies No. 1' by Joseph Mouret; "Funeral Marach of a Marionette" by Charles Gounod; and "Requiem (The Fifth)" by Beethoven, Mozart and Paul O'Neill, arranged by Bob Phillips and adapted by Swearingen.

The band, conducted by Michael Hanes, Director of Bands Emeritus at SIUC, will perform "A Festival Prelude" by Alfred Reed, "Madurodam," a concert suite by Johan de Meij, "Lawrence of Arabia" by Maurice Jarre, "American River Songs" by Pierre La Plante, and movements from "Suite Francaise" by Darius Milhaud. The band will also perform the "March of the Belgian Paratroopers" and "Hands Across the Sea" by John Philip Sousa.
