The Du Quoin Chamber of Commerce's Merry Money promotion has its first winner, and there will be more to come in the weeks ahead.

This year, the program launched Nov. 25, also known nationally as "Small Business Saturday." The first Merry Money winner was Michele Klein, who won a $25 gift card to spend at a participating chamber business. Also as part of the first day's activities, Santa -- who looked curiously like Du Quoin Fire Chief Bob Shaw -- stopped in to visit at several downtown businesses.

Shoppers become eligible for the weekly Merry Money drawing by filling out a ticket and placing it in a box provided by the chamber at each participating business. Shoppers may fill out a ticket each time they visit a participating business and make a purchase.

The chamber has upcoming drawings for $50 in week two, $75 in week three and $100 in week four. The next winner will be announced Dec. 4.
