The Harrisburg High School girls’ bowling team fell just short in their bid for a trip to the state tournament as they finished sixth out of the 12-team O’Fallon Sectional Saturday.

Harrisburg missed out on the fourth and final qualifying spot by 54 pins. The top four teams were Herrin, Collinsville, Salem and O’Fallon.

“It was heartbreaking to see our girls get so close and not make it,” Harrisburg head coach Doug Cottom said. “With one game to go, we were in fifth, but only 29 pins out of fourth. Salem had a monster game and leapfrogged us and Alton to jump into the Top-4. Our girls really performed well all day, with most having never been in that situation before.

On a brighter note, senior Rebecca Stricklin and freshman Elizabeth Davis grabbed the final two spots as individuals and will be making the trip to Rockford this week for the state finals Friday and Saturday.
