  • Almost all eyes locally were focused on one race when the election returns started to flow into the Franklin County tally room: The nomination for Democrat candidate for county clerk.
Karen Milcic Kase carried the nomination with nearly 58 percent of the ballots.
The tally, unofficially, was Kase 1,341, and Beth Williams, 984.
The county's Republicans cast their ballots against the assumed frontrunner of the GOP election, Bruce Rauner, by casting their lot with Kirk Dillard.
Dillard carried 53 percent of the votes; Rauner about 26 percent.
Democrat voters scorned Gov. Pat Quinn by casting 852 votes for him while giving 1,103 ballots to Quinn's nearly nearly unknown opponent, Tio Hardiman.
The county's Republicans favored Tom Cross, 1,007, over Bob Grogan as the party's state treasurer nominee.
In the pure popularity contest category, unopposed Democrat Sheriff Donald R. Jones amassed 2,032 votes, the high for county officeholders.
Republicans were asked to pick a candidate they believe can unseat veteran U.S. Sen. Richard J.. Durbin. The local GOP overwhelmingly selected James D. Oberweis, 1,388, to 490 ballots for Douglas Lee Truax.
The voter turnout was very light with 2,397 of the county's 29, 413 registered voters casting ballots.
