  • The Illinois State Board of Education recognizes schools each year for their academic achievement.

School districts across the state are honored for improving test scores and/or maintaining a high level of achievement. Ewing-Northern Community Consolidated District 115 is one of those elite school districts.
Ewing Superintendent Kristin Ing said this recognition is an honor for the school.

“These awards demonstrate that all the hard work and dedication by teachers, staff, students, parents, administration and Board members is all worth it,” Ing said. “Students and staff at Ewing Grade School should be proud of their academic accomplishments.”

In late January, Ewing Grade School was announced as an Illinois Spotlight School and an Illinois Academic Award of Excellence school. Both are high honors for the district recognizing the district as a school that provides high quality education and a district that is meeting state academic standards consistently even when the bar continues to placed higher and higher.

To achieve these honors, the school district had to meet specific requirements for each award. To qualify to be an Illinois Spotlight School, at least half of the students enrolled are classified as low-income and the school must have met state testing standards for the past two years.

To qualify for the Illinois Academic Award of Excellence at least 90 percent of the students had to meet or exceed state standards in both reading and mathematics for at least three consecutive years.

All Academic Excellence schools also achieved Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the past two years. This means the school district met the testing percentile established by the state each year.

In 2012, the Adequate Yearly Progress percentile established by the state was 92.5 percent. Ewing Grade School’s AYP was has been in the 90th percentile for the past three years and was at 95 percent in 2012.

Ewing Grade School has been honored as an Illinois Spotlight School for a total of 4 years and the last three consecutive years: 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The school not only received the Spotlight School Award this year, but also the Academic Award of Excellence for exemplary academic performance.

Ewing is one of 15 school districts in the state of Illinois to receive both honors this year.
Achieving and maintaining excellence is not easy in any school, and Ewing Grade School has proven academic achievement is possible with much work and determination.
