A 19-year-old Benton man was in serious condition at an out-of-state hospital after he allegedly shot himself in the face with a pistol.

Around 3 p.m. Monday, authorities were called to a Cutler Street residence in the Steel City area east of Benton where the shooting took place, according to Capt. Don Jones of the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

Upon arrival, deputies found the victim, identified as Tyler  B. Brookshire, 19, standing on Cutler Street, with a gunshot wound to his face.

Brookshire told deputies the wound was self-inflicted.

He was taken by Cardinal EMS ambulance to Franklin Hospital and was later transferred by helicopter to an out-of-state hospital.

Jones said the investigation into the shooting continues.

A sheriff's department investigator will visit the hospital where Brookshire was taken to speak with doctors treating him and Brookshire himself, if he is able, Jones said.
